This week Crispina takes us to Brooklyn, NY where she interviews maker and sole proprietor Doobie Duke Sims about his innovative upcycled screen printing label, Snow Milk.
Doobie is a “dive in headfirst” kind of an artist and entrepreneur, teaching himself the techniques that Snow Milk is now known for almost on a whim when he found himself renting a studio space that came already set up for screen printing – the same space in which he still creates his signature “1 of 1” aka totally unique clothing pieces.
Sometimes, a creative life doesn’t follow any grand plan, but takes shape almost of its own accord. Doobie never saw himself becoming a fashion icon, but Snow Milk has taken off in Brooklyn and beyond in just two years of business. When you’ve got it, you’ve got it!
Follow Doobie down the Yellow Brick Road as he shares his creative journey with Crispina – from his roots in Brooklyn growing up in a family that values healthy bodies and critical thinking – to his decade on the road with his successful rock band – to the new phase of life that began with the birth of his daughter and the serendipitous ad he answered that led him to his current screen-printing studio and his thriving clothing business, back in Brooklyn!
Skilled already in graphic design from his experience working with band promotion, Doobie found he was a natural at taking thrifted hoodies and sweats and creating one-of-a-kind screen printed wearable art with them. His dreams of creating his own magic and providing a welcome service to people who want to love what they wear took shape quickly amidst the fervor of excelling at a new craft and the never-gets-old rush of finding awesome raw materials languishing in thrift shops and transforming them into absolute fashion magic!
Dive into Episode 18 to learn how Snow Milk grew from an unexpected experiment into a creative dream worthy of Willy Wonka – and a robust livelihood. Doobie and Crispina discuss the values and strategies that have worked really well for Snow Milk, as well as the “dream big, create your own magic” philosophy that Doobie brings with him everywhere.
